Editor’s Note

Dear Readers,

And so summer has begun—at last—just in time for the PCBC show in San Diego, Calif. I’ve spent many summers in the San Diego sun. I’m a big advocate of summers being spent outdoors: hiking, camping, swimming, tanning (as a California girl should), and most of all, I enjoy the nights spent barbecuing with friends and family in the back yard. It’s quite the summer ambiance with twinkle lights hung around the patio, games being played on the table, and of course, the smell of summer fruit, barbecued vegetables (and meat, for you carnivores out there), and the lingering smell of sunscreen.
It’s these aspects of summer that I will never be too old to enjoy. I look forward to nights like these spent at home after a long day writing and editing all the articles you see in our magazines.
The homes with these large outdoor living spaces, or homes geared toward the move-up buyer, have become the most popular types of housing among new home construction. Many builders see growing profit margins by catering to this group of homebuyers, who tend to have more money to spend as they look to relocate. In fact, more than half of America’s biggest builders claim they are targeting move-up buyers. Options’ Editor, Jessica Burger, discusses more on this in the Industry Observations column in this issue.

We’re excited to showcase some great projects this issue including some beautiful Desert Star Construction, Toll Brothers, and Taylor Morrison homes as well as former NFL cornerback Asante Samuels’ $9.5 million home and the hilltop estates of Cordillera Ranch. We have stretched across the nation with these projects from Arizona to Maryland, covering Texas and Florida in between.
A big thanks to Desert Star Construction’s President Jerry Meek for chatting with me for our featured interview in Options magazine. Turn to the back of this issue to see his answers regarding trending design, the custom homebuilding industry, and building green.
On behalf of my staff, thanks for tuning into this special summer issue. We’re excited to hear your feedback. Come ring in the summer with us down in San Diego at PCBC—we’re excited to meet you! And as always, thank you to all of our contributors and advertisers in Options magazine.

Enjoy the sun.
